Calathea Makoyana – Peacock Plant – Terrarium Plant – Pot Size 6 | The Peacock Feather Mini – Challenging Maintenance
This mini diva comes with a haute couture print and her own day/night ritual. In a (semi-)enclosed terrarium, she'll feel like a VIP at the spa: warm, humid, and without the bright spotlight. You provide soft rain/filtered water and an airy, moisture-retaining substrate—she'll bring the "wow." Bonus: once she's happy, she'll "close" her leaves like a book in the evening. Cozy!
✨ Appearance:
Fine oval leaves with a hand-painted "feather" pattern (dark on light green), purple underside. Pot size 6 = compact plant (approx. 8–15 cm) that quickly takes root in the terrarium.
☀️ Location:
Partial shade/bright diffuse; never direct sunlight against the glass (leaf burn and sauna effect). Ideal: 18–26°C, stable, draft-free. In a closed terrarium: 30–50 cm from the lamp.
💧 Water:
Always slightly damp, never soaking wet. Use lukewarm, low-calcium water (rain or filtered). If in doubt, wait a day. Condensation on all walls = too wet → air briefly.
Substrate tip (terrarium): 4 parts coco peat + 1 part perlite + 1 part sphagnum topsoil.
🐾 Pet meter:
Pet-friendly. (But don't let cat paws stir up the moss 😉)
🧽 Maintenance:
Feed very sparingly (once every four weeks in spring/summer, ¼ dose). No leaf shine. Remove dust with a soft brush. In open pots: aim for a humidity of >60% by spraying (lime-free).
✨ Details:
Nyctinasty (leaves move with day/night). Brown edges? Often tap water or air that's too dry. Pale markings? A bit more light—but still diffuse.
🚚 Shipping:
Softly fixed and moist packed. Small creases and transport wrinkles will disappear within 7–10 days with good packaging.
